The New Hampshire USDA gardening map divides the state into six zones: 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, and 6b.

The USDA released a new plant hardiness zone map at the end of 2023, which was the result of three decades of data accumulation from across the country. The classification of zones is determined by a variety of factors, with the most significant factor being extreme average winter low temperatures.

Elevation, urban heat, and proximity to a significant body of water are additional variables that have been assessed. It is recommended for any gardener to begin with the USDA planting zones, despite the absence of factors such as humidity, winter sunshine, soil moisture, and the duration of exposure to frigid temperatures.

Despite the fact that the majority of the planting zones in New Hampshire experience extremely cold winters with chilly lows, a variety of flowers, shrubs, and trees are capable of thriving in this climate. It is always preferable to select native plants that are well-suited to specific growing regions and climatic extremes.

Reputable nurseries in your region will exclusively offer plants that are plainly labeled with the USDA planting zones that are suitable for the plant being sold.

Although the USDA New Hampshire zone map establishes the criterion for winter hardiness, it is not entirely reliable. The failure to correctly plant or care for a flower, tree, or shrub, or an extreme weather event, such as unusually cold or warm temperatures, can result in the damage or death of plants.
