New York Planting Zones: Map of NY Growing Zones

In 1960, the USDA launched the creation of plant hardiness maps and has constantly enhanced their accuracy since then. The previous 2012 map was replaced by a new zone hardiness map in 2023.

The New York planting zones map, which is displayed above, defines the planting regions that are unique to the state of New York. Eight zones comprise the new map.

Each growing zone is separated by a 10-degree difference, while subzones are separated by a 5-degree difference.

When thinking about which plants to grow, gardeners who desire a thriving garden should pay attention to the zone information. The care instructions tag on flowers, shrubs, and trees typically includes the plant hardiness information, which has been embraced by the majority of gardeners and farmers.

The USDA map indicates that New York zones cover a broad spectrum, spanning from 4a to 7b. The plants that can be grown in zone 7b may not be available to those living in zone 4a.

The winter extreme low temperature variance depicted on the map is influenced by elevation and proximity to major bodies of water.

Be sure to conduct thorough research before incorporating any flower, shrub, or tree into your garden, and use the information provided by the NY planting zones map as a foundation when selecting plants.
